April 20 Update

Sunday, I threw up macaroni and my dog ate it.

Monday, I wanted to die.

Tuesday, I almost died.

Today, though…today was not bad. I saw Batman and met a newborn. I also ate honey bbq chicken.

Wednesday, can’t complain.

12 Reasons You Should Smile Right Now

No matter what is happening in your day as of now, take a minute to smile. Smiling has the power to completely turn your entire day around. I know it sounds cheesy, believe me, but it’s worth it to be a bit cheesy for a few seconds if it means making your day better. If you need some motivation, here’s a list of 12 reasons to smile right now:

1 – You are alive, your heart is beating.

The beating heart is a seemingly simple physiological mechanism. (Try saying that 3 times fast.) However, it’s what keeps us all going. And unfortunately, hearts stop beating everyday. So be grateful that your motor is still moving as it should.

2 – The Sun is up there in the sky.

The universe is a vast space of expanding matter. Think about our bright Sun up in the sky – it’s power, it’s energy, it’s ability to help sustain all of our lives down here on Earth. Appreciate the amazing Sun up there, feel it’s heat and see it’s power. Smile.

3 – Today is a new day, a chance to start fresh. 

Whatever happened yesterday, today can be different. You have the power to make today better and more productive than the previous.

4 – Tomorrow will be another new day, with another chance for a new beginning. 

Has today been sucky? Has everything in the book gone wrong? Guess what, tomorrow doesn’t have to be as poor. Hang in there and smile with the promise of another day ahead.

5 – You are on Earth, the most vibrant, flourishing with life planet in the galaxy. 

That could have probably been worded more smoothly, but you see the point. Of all the planets in the universe, we are lucky enough to live on the one with the most life (that we know of). We are here because this amazing planet has the capacity to support our human lives. We owe the Earth for allowing us to live.

6 – For no reason at all.

Psychologically, smiling can actually improve your mood. Even without a reason. Behavior affects the mood in this case. So take a bathroom break and smile in the mirror.

7 – Your past hardships are over. 

Though new challenges present themselves everyday, it helps to take a moment to remember all the battles of the past and how you pushed through. Smile at your persistence and hardiness through the wars of the past.

8 – Your story is yours alone.

Feel genuinely proud that your story is the only story of its kind. No one’s autobiography will mimic your own. Own the fact that you are unique and one of a kind.

9 – You live in the modern world. 

Modern society has its flaws and its own issues, but we can all take a look at the previous centuries and see how lucky we are to live in the present. Medical advances, technological improvements, and overall quality of life have all contributed to generally happier lives. There are pros and cons with progression, but for the most part we are living in a cleaner, healthier world with more opportunities than our ancestors were given.

10 – A smile will make others smile.

One huge cheesy grin on your face has the radiant effect to spread and make someone else smile. So if you can’t find the power to smile for yourself, muster up the strength to cheer someone else up with a smile.

11 – The world is still spinning. 

Here’s another big picture perspective tip – think about your problems in terms of the spinning Earth. All the issues, mistakes, and battles in the world won’t prevent the Earth from rotating. Smile at the rotating Earth, and that no matter how much damage we cause on the surface, it still persists to spin through space.

12 – Life goes on. 

Sometimes life just really sucks. There’s no getting around it most of the time. We win, we lose, we fall, we bleed, and we cry. No matter what, life goes on. Always, life will go on. It’s a promise. And that’s a promise that we can all smile for.

12 Life Mistakes We All Make

Life isn’t easy and we all fall short in various ways in being who we’ve always wanted to be. Our lives will never be picture perfect scenes of joy, happiness, and a lack of issues. That’s just not the way the universe works for anyone in reality. Even though perfection should never be the goal, there are several simple mistakes that we make everyday that we can all change in order to live a better life:

1 – We assume we are all alone in our battles/struggles.

One of the most damaging thoughts to our personal wellness is the false belief that we are alone, that we are the only person on the planet with that particular issue. When we open up and share what’s going on, we find that others, maybe even those close by, are struggling, too.

2 – We forget to enjoy the simple things in life.

It’s so simple, yet so difficult at times. Slow down, smell the flowers, notice the tiny details of life that often are overlooked and ignored. Be conscious about those beautiful moments like laughing with a friend, watching a child have fun, a bird bathing in a puddle, or a pet cuddling up next to your side.

3 – We neglect to be grateful.

Life isn’t perfect and at times it can be frustrating. However, most of us have decent lives that are far better and more free than the masses in other areas of the world. Always be grateful.

4 – We place money high on the list of importance.

Money helps, and yes, it’s necessary for this modern society. But it should never become the goal of life itself. Worrying too much about money will take precious time from other, more important aspects of life.

5 – We get stuck in our daily routines.

Pretty soon with work, school, etc., we become robots living on auto-pilot. This makes life go by ten times faster, so it’s crucial to change things up from time to time. Try new hobbies, go to new places, and make new friends.

6 – We don’t treat ourselves kindly.

The harshest critics tend to be our own selves. You are important and deserve kindness, just like everyone else.

7 – We don’t make time for fun.

Fun isn’t just for children. Everyone needs a burst of fun everyday. It doesn’t have to be a huge event to satisfy your soul. Set aside 10 minutes for “fun” whether it’s watching a funny movie or playing a game.

8 – We can’t “see the forest for the trees.”

This is a common quote, but it’s the truth. We forget the purpose of life, the big picture, as we get caught up in the stress of everyday life. Don’t forget what matters most.

9 – We fail to listen.

We fail to listen to others, our friends, the planet, and ourselves. Pay attention to what’s going on, ask questions, and observe.

10 – We don’t smile enough.

Jobs and school are mostly mundane affairs in which we feel we must complete each day, but it never hurts to sneak a smile into the boring days. Smile at anything that catches your eye. Smile for no reason at all.

11 – We care too much what others think.

No one in the universe is loved by all and free of judgement. We can’t control any thoughts going through a coworker or acquaintance’s mind. So simply, be yourself.

12 – We fear.

We are afraid of everything – the unknown, the lack of plans, changes, not enough changes, etc. Life will happen in its own way whether we worry about it or not. Fear only holds us back.

12 Factors that Do Not Define Your Worth

There’s a lot of misleading information out there today that leads us to feel that our lives are meaningless. It’s difficult to know how truly valuable you are when negative messages surround us. Regardless of what the media, social media, celebrities, magazines, or any other form of advertising say, here are 12 things that absolutely do NOT define your worth as a person:

1 – Your income.

Everyone is always out for more money and a higher paying job. Even centuries ago, throughout different methods of currency, humans have made the mistake of associating wealth with self worth. That’s basically reducing people to the minuscule value of a tiny rock of copper. Let’s understand that we are so much more than a dollar bill. Income might be a factor when you pay bills, but it does not, in any way, make you more or less of a valuable person.

2 – Your weight.

Weight loss is discussed everyday, on every channel, in every advertisement. It’s so much of an obsession that we as a country are daily doing the exact opposite of losing weight. It’s because “weight” and “self-worth” have become nearly interchangeable. Let’s be more than a number on a scale. Yes, go for some walks and work on health, but know how amazing you are while you are doing it. You have value, no matter the number of pounds or kilograms.

3 – Your social status.

We are often sent the message that without dozens of friends surrounding us day and night, we aren’t worth people. The truth is, some people like having a lot of friends constantly hanging around – and some do not. Some are fine with one close friend while others need more contact. Some people live in areas where making friends is difficult and others have little desire to meet anyone new. Whatever your style is, it’s perfectly fine. Be you, because that makes you valuable – not striving to meet an expectation sold by TV commercials.

4 – The number of followers you have on social media.

This might be an issue for younger generations, but the number of followers one has, has become synonymous with “worth.” “I’ll be a worthy human when I hit 10K followers.” Again, let’s understand that we are more than a number.

5 – The number of likes you get on each picture you post.

I’ve felt before that a picture I posted of myself was ugly or annoying just because it didn’t get very many “likes” on social media. I then started to question the way I look, what my caption was, etc. I worried about it for days. I know we all do this. It’s not okay. “Likes” shouldn’t be used as validation of self worth. Do not be harsh on yourself or think less of who you are because you fail to receive a hundred “likes” on social media.

6 – The clothes you wear.

Be comfortable, wear what you like, or follow fashion if it interests you – but never let your worth come from something material. Fashion can be a hobby and. for most, clothes shopping is enjoyable. But the clothes you wear do not define the worth you were born with.

7 – Your mental health.

We live in a world that cultivates mental issues. The majority of the population suffers from depression, anxiety, or other debilitating problems. We are set up to have these issues while being told at the same time that it’s shameful to have these disparities. Take care of yourself and pay attention to your mental state, but never let it define you or shame you. We all have issues, we are NOT our issues. You have value, regardless of if you suffer from some sort of mental illness. You are human, you have value, and you have worth.

8 – Your physical health.

Another issue with our society is that it tells us we must be pictures of perfect health, while leading us to constantly partake in unhealthy activities – overworking, rushing, stressing, never resting, etc. Most physical ailments aren’t our fault, anyway. Work on health, yes, but do not define your value by it. Having diabetes, a stomach virus, or high blood pressure doesn’t make you any less of a worth person.

9 – Your mistakes.

Your mistakes do not define you. We all screw up, constantly. Everyday is likely to have a few mistakes in it. That’s life, that’s being human. Learn from mistakes, and never let them bring you down. Mistakes are proof that you aren’t sheltered up in a bedroom all day. Step out, try new things, mess up a lot, and live your life. You are NOT your mistakes. You are more than that.

10 – Your career.

This goes along with income and social status, but many people define themselves by their career alone and forget that there is a world outside of work. If you love what you do for a living, that’s great. Just don’t define who you are by something that could be taken away one day. Find a job you love, but remember that you have value outside of work.

11 – The things you own.

Similar to income, we place a lot of self-worth in what car we drive, how clean our home is, and what iPhone we’re going to buy. Things are only things and they won’t last forever, no matter how much money we spend on them. Self worth and value do last forever, so don’t put your value on material items.

12 – What others think about you.

There’s a reason it’s called SELF-worth and SELF-value, SELF-esteem, etc. Others will think what they will, and we have no control over it. Don’t place your value in someone else’s hands. You are worthy. There will always be negative people in the worth. Know that your value is way more than the thoughts of others.

There are many good habits to take advantage of in order to make more out of life, and journaling is one of them. Here are 12 reasons why everyone, regardless of age, gender, social status, etc. – should keep a journal:

1 – Journaling forces us to slow down for a minute.

We live in a very fast paced society. Many days can pass us by before we even realize it’s actually been many weeks. Writing in a journal will force you to take a moment to slow down and realize what’s going on around.

2 – Journaling is a safe place to vent.

Every person on this planet could use a healthy outlet to vent and release strong emotions. Write it out, get it out of your brain and onto a sheet of paper so your mind can relax.

3 – Journaling helps you to enjoy special moments more by reliving the events as you write, and by having a record of milestones in life.

Writing down special moments, recording each detail as you remember it and how it made you feel will help you to cherish the moment even more. It goes back to slowing down and really dissecting the milestones you experience in life.

4 – Journaling is free.

All these benefits to offer and guess what? It’s free. Well, you might have to pay $2 for a composition notebook. But other than that, the positive effects of journaling are far too great to pass up.

5 – Journaling helps keep feelings in check.

Being overemotional is never a fun experience. Even being overly excited or joyful can lead to poor decisions. Journaling provides a release of those powerful emotions as it takes you away from the situation for a moment to settle down and vent simultaneously.

6 – Journaling helps you reflect on life in general.

Are you satisfied with the way your life is going? A journal gives you a firsthand account, in your own words, of your life. Reflect over the previous pages and ask yourself if you are living the way you’d like to be living.

7 – Journaling will take you away from social media for a few moments.

Social media can be very destructive. Put your phone aside for a bit and focus solely on your journal in front of you.

8 – Journaling helps you spot unhealthy or healthy patterns in your life.

If you are feeling low, physically or emotionally, look back through the pages of the journal you’ve been keeping and search for patterns. Did you eat out a lot? Did friends cancel plans multiple times? Thumb through the pages and find the consistencies and/or inconsistencies.

9 – Journaling will help you figure things out.

Jotting down ideas and brainstorming are great ways to figure issues out by exploring all the potential solutions. Journaling tends to be a form of this – sporadically writing down thoughts until finally something falls into place.

10 – Journals can be fun to look back on.

Similar to a photo album, old journals can be entertaining to look through years after they’ve been written. Laugh, cry, reminisce – you’ll be glad you wrote when you did because re-reading the pages will feel like re-living the moment.

11 – Journaling will keep your brain active.

Writing, reading, and planning what to write – all serve to keep the brain active and running. Neurons fire as you scribble down each sentence onto the page.

12 – Journaling will keep you grounded.

This point, in a way, ties everything together. Keeping a journal and writing in it daily will overall help you stay in check with your mind, body, emotions, habits, milestones, and anything else in your life that affects your wellness.
